About the Event
The first annual Hilton Head Plantation (HHP) Christmas Lights Ride has been reschedule to Thursday, Dec 17th due to rain. Riders will park in the HHP Plantation House and should plan on arriving 6:30 p.m. the ride will start at 7:00 after a "night riding safety briefing". A hybrid or Mt. bike would be best suited for this ride as it will consist of slow speeds and frequent stops!
In preparation for KABC's first night ride, please ensure your bike is in compliance with SCs Bicycle Laws, as follows: 56-5-3470 states "A bicycle when in use at nighttime must be equipped with a lamp on the front which must emit a white light visible from a distance of a least 500 ft. to the front and with a red reflector on the rear that must be visible from all distances from 50 ft. to 300 ft. to the rear when directly in front of the lawful upper beams of head lamps on a motor vehicle. A lamp emitting a red light visible from a distance of 500 ft. to the rear may be used in addition to the red reflector."
This law is being brought to your attention because a lot of us have a red light on the back of our bikes but not a reflector! The reflectors should be aimed level (may not be seen if pointed up or down) and the headlight aimed so top of light is just below the horizon - bring spare batteries or extra lights!Reflective clothing should be worn! Also keep in mind that highlighting the moving parts of your body, that make you recognizable as human (your feet and legs), with reflective material at night has a much grater visual impact. This is an instinctual perceptual phenomenon called "sensitivity to biomotion" - its all about being seen!!
John Marcinowski will be coordinating this event and can be emailed at email@example.com with any questions.
